Geremy’s 2024 Insights: Travel

An unintended side-effect of living in my dream house is that I never want to leave it.  I’ve turned my home into a place where I genuinely look forward to spending my time, so my decision to go anywhere is now measured by whether I’d enjoy being there more than I’d enjoy being home.  For the first half of the year, there weren’t many places that passed this test, so I barely left the house and worked from my home office.  But then things shifted when the weather shifted in June and I started venturing outside again.  Here’s a summary of my travels by plane and car throughout the year.

From June to December of 2024, I took a total of ten flights to four destinations.  These flights were with two different airlines, United and JetBlue, passed through six different airports, and included trips to Houston, Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, and Trinidad.

For my car, I requested all of the information that Tesla collected on it.  At best, I expected a 5-megabyte spreadsheet with a few pieces of data, but instead, I received over 20 gigabytes of data, including every single interaction with the car, timestamped to the millisecond. There were hundreds of thousands of rows of information, and no spreadsheet application could handle the millions of cells in each daily file. As a result, I had to teach myself how to analyze large datasets to do my analysis.  Here is my 2024 summary for my Tesla Model X:

Driving

  • My highest recorded speed was 109.65mph (don’t judge…)
  • My highest recorded speed in reverse was 7.35mph
  • My average speed was 44mph

 Vehicle Features

  • I pressed the horn a total of 22 times
  • I used the windshield washer 69 times
  • The windshield wipers wiped the windscreen 5788 times
  • I listened to the AM/FM/XM radios for 0 minutes
  • I used the left turn signal 3505 times and the right turn signal 3463 times

Trunks and Doors

  • The rear trunk was opened 120 times
  • The front trunk was opened 50 times
  • The driver’s door was opened 1479 times
  • The passenger door was opened 150 times
  • The rear driver’s door was opened 383 times
  • The rear passenger’s door was opened 24 times

Charging

  • I charged 443 charging cycles
  • I used the Tesla Supercharger 10 times
  • The car spent a total of 1289 hours charging
  • The car used a total of 12,158 kilowatts of energy charging

Repairs

  • $4,538 was spent on repairs (OOF!!)

What does all of this information tell us?  I only listen to Spotify, Apple Music, and Bluetooth in my car, I barely use my right rear passenger door, and I’m a really calm driver who barely uses the horn.

For 2025, I predict that my flights will increase to 20 flights to 10 different destinations, and my car usage will drop overall. Also, perhaps this will be the year that I upgrade my car into a better non-Tesla electric vehicle.

This marks the completion of my year-end summaries for 2024.  Now it’s time to move forward and work on making 2025 a great year!
